Yesterday I made a post about being focused and listed some of the projects I spend time on. I also said I’m going to “dump” all but one of those project.
Before I tell you which one and why. What do you think I should focus on and why? I was going to make a whole post dedicated to that question, but… That’s too much work. Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments though.
How I Came To My Decision
I had a number of tools to come up with what my main focus should be:
- I’ve been listing my goals on a daily/weekly basis for more than half a year
- I’m naturally passionate for some things more than others
- My present set of skills and “personal branding”
- Talking to people
Goals – My “daily” goals (it’s more daily some weeks than others 😉 ) give a pretty clear view on what I should focus on. It includes things I’m passionate about while also including REAL LIFE shit. I usually do 10 goals a day and, of those ten, half or more are directly related to increasing my monthly income. That’s something to think about.
Passion – While some people may struggle to find one passion I have more than a couple. My single longest running and deepest passion is my love of martial arts (tai chi) and Asian culture. If I based my decision on passion alone, I’d focus 100% of my efforts on building my tai chi school. Lucky for me I have a couple more things I’m passionate about. Things like technology, community organizing, gaming, economics, personal development… Some of these passions will do a better job at increasing my monthly income than others. 😉
Current Skills and “Personal Branding” (Note: I think personal branding is a somewhat douchee term. lol) If I’m going to focus on JUST one thing, leveraging the skills and name for myself I’ve already built up would be a really good idea (especially if I want to increase the monthly $ along with it). As much as I’d like to be known as a world renowned economist, the next Bruce Lee or “success guru,” I have a lot of work to do to get there. In the social/tech/gaming space I’ve already carved out somewhat of a niche. That’s something to keep in mind.
Talking to people – If I go back in time… people have been telling me to leverage my YouTube/social media success for a while. I have to give a shoutout to my homedog Romke (link to Twitter because, as they say, “The webbler’s websites go unupdated.”). I asked him a question that basically gave me the answer (feel free to steal this question and use it on yourself if you’ve been suffering from the same affliction as I 🙂 ):
Me: If you were an investor getting ready to invest $10,000,000 in a startup and I was on the team, what would you want me to be doing?
Romke: I’d want you to be the community organizer.
I didn’t put a dollar amount on the question when I asked him, but I think it’s an even better question that way. Be sure you ask someone that knows you well enough to give you a good response. Something else to think about is, even if community organizing isn’t my STRONGEST strength, if that’s what people were willing to invest in and getting investment (or paying clients/customers) was my goal, I should (in theory) start strengthening that skill!
What I Didn’t Choose
Here are some things REALLY close to my heart, that I decided to put the brakes on. That doesn’t mean I won’t revisit them again in the future, it just means I’m not going to let them take away from what I’m focusing on right now:
PwningLife.com – I REALLY want to be working on this RIGHT NOW. It’s just that… I really need to be focusing on pwning my life before sharing tips and tricks to others! 😉
Black Horse Tai Chi – My life has pretty much revolved around the pursuit of becoming a tai chi master (well… first karate master from watching Karate Kid) since I was about 6. It’s why I traveled to Asia, it’s why I learned to speak Chinese, it’s why I’ve started teaching tai chi. That said, focusing on this 100% and trying to make a living from teaching tai chi full time isn’t what I want to do right now. I can totally keep things rolling the way they are without taking away from my main focus.
The MilTownKlan – Man… I’ve gone on and off with this for a long time now. Explaining my goal with the MilTownKlan goes beyond the scope of this post but… if Pwning Life was the game I want it to be, then the MilTownKlan would be one of thousands of clans to join and “do battle” with. 🙂 It’s going on the shelf for now.
Low Hanging Sales – I just started this! How can I quit! Well, I’m not quitting. I’m just changing my roles so they will focus on my strengths and be in line with what I’m going to focus on. I’m sure my partner and I will have an update about that later on today on the website and YouTube channel. 🙂
Boom. That’s what I’m going to focus on. I’m going to eat, sleep, dream, have sex with, build, love and make sandwiches with it. Social Milwaukee is going to start as a monthly meetup, but it’s going to be oh so much more than that as time goes on. Social Milwaukee is going to be where the online social media and community building tools/skills merge with old school, offline tribe building/community organizing. It’s going to be the city’s central location where people find out how to make the groups they’ve already created better, learn how to create groups or find a group to join.
The focus is going to be on real, authentic community building that throws ROI and stats out the window and focuses on real interactions and communication with the members of the group in ways that (currently) cannot be efficiently tracked. Whether you’re a business, nonprofit, school, church, etc. won’t matter. The only thing that matters is that you’re interested in building REAL communities (bonus for being communities that improve the city).
Imagine a city where EVERY single resident is the organizer of, learning to build or a part of an active healthy group. It doesn’t matter what the group is. Democratic/Republican, Gay/Straight, Graffiti/Anti-Graffiti, Beer/Wine(os). As long as everyone is a part of a group that is actively discussing things they’re passionate about, the collective consciousness of the whole city will get raise and the effects of that will (in my opinion) be monumental.
Anyhow, it’s going to be a marriage of a bunch of things I’m HIGHLY passionate about and interested in:
- Social Media
- Gaming (not the gaming you’re thinking about, more like gamification)
- Changing the world
- Milwaukee (and making it awesome.) I freaking named myself after the city.
- Social Entrepreneurship
- Cowbell (mainly having more)
I’m going going to put a lot of the projects I’ve been casually working on totally to sleep for a while (like the MilTownKlan and PwningLife). The funny thing is, I haven’t really worked out the exact revenue model for what I’m doing other than (if you don’t catch the reference, see this video):
Phase 1: Become the heavy weight king of the social community building world
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: PROFIT
Think I made the right decision? Let me know in the comments. 🙂
