Dan Knauss You Seem Like An Interesting Fellow

February 20th, 2009 § 2 Comments

I really don’t like “hiding” stuff I put out on the internet, but [my last post] caused some small waves. Here’s my attempt to get “permission” to let that post hang it’s nuts in the breeze once again. I wrote that post with only about 1.5 hours of sleep after working at [the club] the night before and waking up manic. That makes me do and say interesting things sometimes… :D

The post is password protected right now, but I basically went on a tirade about Sonya’s husband was (IMO at the time) a douche bag. A part of what upset me so much was the fact that he seemed like such an interesting fellow as well. Why would he snap at me like that? Anyhow, here are the series of events that led up to that post.

The Chaos Theory of Education

February 9th, 2009 § 1 Comment

“The Tipping Point” brought my attention to something Malcolm Gladwell called “the rule of 150.” In a nutshell this rule states approximately 150 people is the maximum size that a group can reach and stay relatively self managed (it’s also called [Dunbar's Number]). What was also brought to my attention was the company Gore-Tex. This company uses that number as a limit to how large a section of their business can reach before splitting.

I decided to do some more research on Gore-Tex this morning and ran into [a blog post] that led me to an article in the Financial Times titled ["The Chaos Theory of Leadership."] « Read the rest of this entry »

Are You Autotelic?

February 6th, 2009 § 2 Comments

That was the subject of an email I got from [my brother]. Here was the body:

I came across this and thought of you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autotelic

Here’s a excerpt from Wikepedia:

Autotelic is used to describe people who are internally driven, and as such may exhibit a sense of purpose and curiosity. This determination is an exclusive difference from being externally driven, where things such as comfort, money, power, or fame are the motivating force.

I think my bro was right to think of me. After I read it I was like “No wonder I can’t keep a job to save my life.” :D It seems like pretty much everyone must start life being autotelic and it gets smothered out over time.

It’s too bad that money plays such a strong role in what motivates people to do things. I look forward to creating jobs that satisfy a person’s internal motivators. I’ll have to look into it deeper, but I have a feeling that many of the [Fortune 2009 - Best Companies List] include companies that do a good job catering to their employees internal motivators (along with good compensation).

Thought I’d share the term.

Where Am I?
