New Media+Nonprofits and Thoughts On Both

I made the video to display why it took me a couple days to get back to everyone (the mess of moving
).

Earlier this week I got to be a guest at a local “giving circle.” I had never heard of one of these before getting invited a couple weeks ago. A giving circle is a group of individuals that pool money together and find a place to put said money. The place they find to put the money comes after weeks (months… years?) of discussing issues that are important to the members of the group. Googling the term “giving circle” brought me to this website [GivingCircles.org] if you want information about that. I think I’m going to have to start my own after seeing how one operates and thinking about it for three seconds… But that will be for future discussion.
Hello To All Whom I Met On Thursday
Hello! This post is going to be dual purposed. One purpose will be to further introduce myself to the members of the group I met that morning. The other purpose will be to inform any other readers who may stumble upon this page, my thoughts on social media and nonprofits. « Read the rest of this entry »
Which Video Should I Make Next?

Weapons Are Starting To Seem Interesting…
November 9th, 2008 § 3 Comments
I’ve been doing martial arts for over ten years now and weapons never really intrigued me. I always figured I should master using my hands and body before worrying much about weapons (swords, staffs, throwing darts, knives, etc.) Well, I recently ran my favorite clip from my favorite kung fu movie on YouTube (I love YouTube
). After seeing it I thought to myself “I would like to start studying the staff.”
Scene is from “Eight Diagram Pole Fighter.”
Also, when I was in Oakland a few months ago I attended a class taught by a student of [Sonny Umpad]. Sonny was a master of the stick and knife fighting art called [Eskrima]. I think that class is what first peaked my interest. Let me find a bad ass Sonny Upad clip from YouTube…
The way he moves and the stuff I learned made me see knife and stick fighting as a thing of beauty.
Milwaukee’s Sales Tax Referendum: Vote Yes
November 3rd, 2008 § 4 Comments
Two quick things. First one is, I made a video (don’t feel obligated to watch it, just pointing it out.
)
Second is I want to hear your opinion about this. Why do you think voting yes is a good or bad idea? Leave it in the comments. I was just going through the comments on the video and my mom brought up a good point:
It is unfortunate that the only way to fund these necessary services is through a sales tax, one of the most regressive forms of taxation. There is no reason public transportation has to be so expensive, inaccessible, and dangerous. If some of our federal tax dollars used to subsidize cars was put in public transportation, we wouldn’t have to have a sales tax to fund public transportation.
Yet another reason to add to my long “I hate big inefficient governments” list. Miss allocation of resources. Car and oil companies spend top dollar bribing politicians into allocating federal funds to road construction. Car and oil companies don’t want AWESOME public transportation. Grrr… On to the post. « Read the rest of this entry »
