One of the first things I used to do at the beginning of the year is hold up a piece of paper with a pin hole in it (or an imaginary one) and imagine they were looking at themselves in five years. Then I asked them to write at least a paragraph describing what they saw, what were they doing, where were they living, what were they wearing, what was their life like. It was a way for me to get a sample of their writing and to get them thinking.
