Larry Lessig: How Creativity is being strangled by the law
The title of this post was miltownmom’s response to the [Oprah vs Over 9000 Penises] post I wrote yesterday. Actually, here’s the full quote:
Why are you wasting your time on this stuff? Don’t you have better things to do?
I watched the above video last night and I think it is the perfect response to that statement. I also think it will help you better understand why I am “wasting my time on this stuff.” I won’t beat around the bush. What has been done with Oprah’s comment is art. Art that is AWESOME to me, but totally stupid to the untrained eye. Let me give you a reverse example. I just found a Wikipedia article titled ["List of most expensive paintings"]. The [most expensive piece] listed on the list is valued at $149,700,000. And this is what it looks like:
On the surface that seems like… I don’t even know what else to say but “WHAT THE FUCK?!?” I know that there must be some kind of historical significance to the piece, the choice of colors must have been awesome and God must have signed the back but… It still doesn’t make much sense to me. This video does (and it was free!

An email I got from Mom last week.
Casey,
I read your group Anonymous hacked into Sarah Palin’s yahoo account where she was doing her government work so there would be no official record of it. Mark one for Anonymous.

Reminds me… I need to follow up on [that political blog post] I made a little while ago…

Ok, so the first video makes sense. The next video probably requires a knowledge of video gaming I don’t have to make more sense. You posted it before, and I assume the power level references are about a game, and Oprah got “gamed” because she didn’t understand to context of the post. It wasn’t really about penises raping kids, right?

Something like that. The important part of the video was the “Over 9,000″ reference. The original “over 9,000″ video is used to make a ton of jokes on the internet. Then someone left that comment on Oprah’s website as a joke. Then she said it seriously (to her personal army) even though it was a joke. Now the internet is making a joke.

Something happened to my comment. What I said is I think you’d enjoy the book The Pirate’s Dilemma, all about creativity, remixing and sharing content, etc. The ebook version is available for free download.
