Finding My Calling

January 28th, 2007 § 5 Comments

I’ve been “blessed” with the ability to learn and do just about anything I put my mind to. I put blessed in quotation marks because it’s essentially made it difficult for me to focus on any one thing long enough to… make a career out of it I suppose.

In the past the closest I could come up with as far a career direction was “a job in computers.” I guess that would boil down to something is IS/IT (I guess.) But those fields are very broad and I never found any one thing in them that “spoke” to me. I like knowing a bit about everything when it comes to computers and technology.

My mom once told me I might make a good actuary, so I spent a bunch of time researching that job. It did and does seem like something I could really enjoy. Nerding out with numbers all day long. The thing about that job is I have a feeling that although it would be mentally stimulating/challenging, it probably wouldn’t be very fulfilling.

The last career choice I’ve ever “seriously” considered is being a physical therapist. That line of work would go right hand in hand with a lot of my hobbies and I’m sure it would be rewarding. The only down side is I’d have a lot of schooling in front of me before I could start working.

One of my gripes about school is that I thought (and think) it’s a waste of time. The reason I don’t/didn’t want to go to school “for computers” was because I thought I could teach myself that stuff (and I, for the most part, can.) Same goes for being an actuary or a physical therapist. Those kinds of jobs are pretty much just technical jobs. You don’t need to debate issues and the like. You just need to learn the material and perform well.

Something Worth Going to School to Study

I’ve recently felt a really strong pull to go to school for economics. I’m not yet sure if it’s the current flavor of the month, or something that will truly stick, but I’m finding myself reading more and more about it and becoming more and more intrigued (the deeper I go.) Economics also puts to use something I was naturally gifted at, math. I also did something that I’ve never done for any other discipline…

Last week, I surfed over to MIT’s OpenCourseWare website and downloaded some of the courses on economics. I’ve known about that place for a long time, but I’ve never been moved by anything enough to actually go download something. Reading through the course has also made me very interested in become a student of economics.

Ever the Entrepreneur

I still have 1001 ideas and business plans coming to me by the hour, but I figure I’m getting to the point where I better get focused on some sort of career. I would actually like a job. A really challenging job, that makes me think and think and think and think, and figure shit out. I suppose I come up with plans for business to make up for the lack of thought needed for most jobs.

Technical Difficulties and Hidden Ass Crack

Two days ago, I set out to set up my Xbox 360 to stream videos from my computer. It was suppose to be an easy task. All I had to do was upgrade to Media Player 11 and I was pretty much good to go. [There's a blog that explains the whole thing right here.]

After downloading and running the Media Player install yesterday: STOP. You need Service Pack 2. No matter, I’d just update my windows. That’ll take, what, 30 mintues?

30 minutes quickly turned into hours, since I’ve never ran an update in my computers 4+ year life. I ended up having to update it a few times before it was ready for Service Pack 2. Well, just now tonight, I finished getting service pack 2 installed (that took a few hours itself) and I got videos streaming from my computer to the Xbox 360.

Google Reader – For Staying Up to Date

January 24th, 2007 § 7 Comments

I used to use Bloglines to keep track of the blogs I read but I never really became “one” with using it. I never got accustomed to the way things were setup, and reading everyone’s blogs became somewhat of a chore at times. Well, my homedog Robonutz got me on the Google Reader tip and, like most things Google, it’s mighty fly.

I had heard about it in the past, but never bothered to check it out. Last week I moved all of my blogs from Bloglines to Google, and things couldn’t be better. I won’t get into all of the hows and whys, Google does a fine job of it themselves. I do recommend giving it a spin if you aren’t totally happy with your current RSS reader (especially if it’s a web based one.) If you’re currently not using one, check it out. I’d be happy to help any readers get it setup. You’ll probably be glad you did.

The Art of War

January 23rd, 2007 § 3 Comments

This is kind of a note to self + announcement.  I found out today that I might get the chance to participate in an MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) event in China.  That means that I’m going to have to get really serious about training and getting into TOP PHYSICAL CONDITION.

I have been secretly planning for this event ever since I heard about the possibility of me going a few months back.  I’ve arranged my schedule so I’ll have max flexibility and a lot of time to train.  It’s going to go down on March 24th in Beijing. I don’t know for sure whether I’m going or not, but I’m going to start training hard now anyway (I need to.)

LinkingIn, Upgrading and a Load of Photos

January 23rd, 2007 § 5 Comments

I spent the whole day glued to the boob-tube (does that work for computers?) I chatted with some fold on the various chat platforms, hooked up my linked in profile and upgraded WordPress to version 2.1.

I haven’t noticed any major changes to WordPress yet, but one nice thing is the “tabbed” WYSIWYG, which allows you to switch from code to visual views easily (I’m using it now.) Oh, and while writing this post I noticed the autosave feature. A very welcome addition.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is like MySpace for the business professional. It’s a cool way to network and all that jazz. I’ll let my profile speak for itself, take a look at it here. If I get any sweet jobs or anything from using it, I’ll be sure to let you guys know.

The Photos

Our first pack of photos are from a club called Wax. That’s where I was “getting jiggy” last Wednesday.
