Google Earth for Your Phone

March 30th, 2006 § Leave a Comment

So I found out you can do [Google Local] on your mobile now (Link to mobile site).  I downloaded it, tested it and posted about it.  Someone asked me if I could find a certain location with it and I did (see that post by clicking here.)  See what happnes when you have a spare minute on your hands and you’re a Digital Ninja (or Pirate depending on who you ask.)

Anyhow, another fun thing to do with your mobile phone from good ol’ Google.

Now I’ll be off to run some errands for the day.  Enjoy!

(I sort of geeked out today :D )

Every Post Doesn’t Need a Picture

March 30th, 2006 § 13 Comments

I’ve come to the realization that evey post doesn’t need a picture. Mayeb pictures even take away from posting a bit since focus is drawn from what I write. I’ll still have pictures with most of my posts I’m sure, but I will no longer make it a requirement for myself to have pictures along with every post.

The biggest news I have for you today is the release of Supermemo 2.0 for the Palm. This is great news for me because it had become my main method for Chinese study. Ever since I upgraded my Palm (about 6 months ago.) I haven’t been able to use it. Supermemo 2.0 changed that. It is now compatible with Hi-Resolution Palms and a has a bunch of new features that you’re sure to like. Check out the site for the low-down.

[SuperMemo 2.0]

I cannot even begin to explain how helpful using this program has been for my language study.  This isn’t a program that does it for everyone, BUT if you happen to be one of the people the fall in love with using it, you’ll be VERY glad you did.  It makes learning Chinese fun and exciting for me EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK.  If you have a Palm, do download the demo and check it out.  I will soon have a page up on my site somewhere with the databases I’ve made already and tips for using it.

I just laid down 15,000NT for 3 months of language class.  I would recommend a person skipping class for 3 months and using the money to buy a Palm, Supermemo and the Pleco dictionary ( http://www.pleco.com/ ) instead (that is if you can try out this stuff first and see if your the kind of person that likes it all.)  Supermemo gets used EVERYDAY and the dictionary almost as frequent.  Getting everything would probably set you back about 11,000NT and I think would be a better investment, especially if you already have a basic understanding of Chinese.

If you have a Palm, both programs can be tested for free, so there’s really nothing to lose.

From the Supermeo site ( http://www.supermemo.com/ ):

  1. Save time

With minimum number of repetitions scheduled for you by SuperMemo, you waste no time on repeating material you know well. You will be amazed with what speed and volume of learning you can reach. All that without a decrease in recall

I’ll say it again.  Supermemo is not for everyone, but you try it and find out it’s something you like it could potentially save you LOTS of time, heart ache and money (well, time is money ;) .)

OK, enough about Supermemo.  My mind is blank about anything else right now.  I’ll probably get one more post in today because I don’t work this afternoon.  I want to spend some time working on the LETS.

An Artsy Fartsy Weekend

March 27th, 2006 § 3 Comments

I let Helen run things Saturday. We went and did what she said to do. It was her day. What happens when you let a girl take control of your day for a change? Artsy Fartsyness, that’s what (at least it was cool artsy fartsy.)

The Saturday began with breakfast. Just the usaul Taiwan style one. If you have no idea what that is, comment about it and I’ll make a post about the usual (mine is 蛋餅, Chocolate Taoist, a sammich and a milk tea.) Afterwards, we made the hike up to Guandu Artsy Fartsy University.

It was nice going back to Gaundu (that’s up by Danshui.) It was my previous to Yonghe living grounds. I know the area semi-well, so making our way up the hill to the school was no problem. We ran into all kinds of cool artsy fartsyness. This Akira-like automobile being my favorite.

Cool Car

You can see the rest of the shots in the [Flickr Photoset (click this bitch right here)]

Our final destination was the art museum, which houses a cafe called “2nd Floor” (which suprising seemed to be on B2 at first, but view from another angle actually was the 2nd floor.) There we got to see some punk bands. First being… Remember the Meek I believe. This band was comprised of some foreigners. I enjoyed. The second band was “The Riot” which was equally if not more so enjoyed.

The Riot

Then it was back to the MRT to regroup at home. On the way back, I realized that we would be passing through the (WORLD FAMOUS) Shilin Night Market, so we hopped off and walked about. I decided to get me one of those Indian wrap things over by the Mr. Donut. Childern. Cover your eyes. The lamb wrap thingy is fan-fuckingtasmastamic! OK, look back now. I will be heading back that one for another soon… He’s the vendor guy doing the flippy dippy thing.

After doing the night market thing, we decided to get a copious amount of beer and drink (at home.) Then we got some more when we went dry (and drank some more.) Then Helen was like lets go out! And I was like…

Notice how sporty the bluetooth headset looks while drunk’ed. That ended the artsy fartsyness.

Moral of the Story: An Artsy Fartsy day can be a good day because you may end up drinking copious amounts of beer. :D

Sunday I made it back to Jujitsu (after an almost 3 month hiatus) and tapped some people and got tapped. I submitted my wife like 7 times!!!! Go me!! She left shortly after that. :)

Fact: miltownkid HAS beaten the Black Car on Ridge Racer.

PEACE! emK

BIG UPS TO [AsiaPundit] for posting about me! I have no idea who he/she is, but if she/he reads this blog, she/he must be quickly approaching the shit if not the shit already (maybe it’s a group of shits?) And thanks to Tesuo for pointing it out for me (YEAH! DAWG!)

Since I’m Up…

Edit: Let me see if I can get some money with a Google Adsense link on this post :D

I got Helen that job yesterday. Worked out just the way I planned. I might even already have someone lined up to fill the spot when she leaves.

I finally saw “The Life Aquatic.” My brother made a big deal of the movie. So did Helen. I thought it was great, but I don’t think I would hype it up to just anyone. I’m sure it’s not some people cup of tea. The movie has a bunch of quirky little scenes that are funny just because. Then it has a couple of kick ass gunning scenes plus a close up of the crazy eyes. Very nice.

When I returned “40 Year Old Virgin” to Blockbuster yesterday I picked up one of these:

It’s a model of a Betelnut Beauty. Very cool and very Taiwan.

My weekend officially starts today in my mind (no more afternoon work.) Had a field trip at the kindergarten this morning to the Fire and Earthquake Safty Building and got to do a bunch of fun activities like molest fire dummies:

I now have the login for the barter software and am going to spend a little time messing with it before I go to sleep.

The line is from good ol’ [Kanye West's] song Diamonds are Forever. I was going to link to his official page, but it seemed a little crap. Even worse than mine I’d say. Maybe I should offer him my services…

A couple funny/interesting things have fallen in my lap this and last week. I might have the chance to be a rapper for kids for a book somewhere. That’d be funny. A job that contacted me through [My語] might get passed off to Helen for the month she’s here. Then I’ll act as a semi-agent for them while Helen works there so they’ll have more time interviewing teachers. The job would be nice because it’s only a hop, skip and a jump away.

JOBNUMBER emailed, then Skyped me about something he wants to start doing. He wants to get into doing custom silk screening (on shirts and stuff.) Then charge people a bunch of money for artsy fartsy stuff. I may somehow be useful for that. He’d also like to find out about making designer vinyls, then design a line of collectables. Do I smell a series of Miltownkids collectables in the future? There is a scene for that here, so I’m actually looking forward to investigating it. It’s pretty big in Hong Kong I think. It’d be making stuff like this:

I also may get into the business of apartment brokering of sorts. Basically I’d be helping some Taiwanese folks I know find foreigners to rent their place out. Then act as a language middle man (if needed.) I even made some money from website hosting last week (then went on to spent half of it drinking… is that considered a tax write off?)

This morning I rocked out my teaching demo. Here’s one pic and clicking it will give you more. I think it went pretty good and should go well the day the parents come watch.

This isn’t the post I was talking about posting. I’ll post that one later. Want to stay current :) .

I guess that about does it.

Fact: miltownkid once jumped off of a 3 story lifegaurd house onto the beach on Lake Michigan. He only limped for 3 months.

Where Am I?
